Jonathan Butler

My Life Story

Jonathan Butler is a South African-born singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose soulful blend of jazz, R&B, and gospel reflects his journey through life under Apartheid. Growing up in Cape Town, he began performing at a young age and quickly became a local sensation. His debut single broke racial barriers as the first by a Black artist to be played on white radio stations in South Africa, earning him a Sarie Award — the nation’s equivalent of a Grammy.

In the late 1970s, Butler joined the acclaimed jazz-rock group Pacific Express, where he developed his craft as a composer and performer. He later moved to the United Kingdom, signing with Jive Records and achieving international fame with his 1987 Grammy-nominated hit “Lies” and a popular duet with Ruby Turner, “If You’re Ready (Come Go with Me).”

Over the years, Butler has maintained a global fan base through his heartfelt music and inspiring performances. His collaborations include projects with George Duke and the Gospel Goes Classical album, which reached top positions on Billboard’s Gospel and Classical Crossover charts.
